History of Don Sphynx

In 1987 Elena Kovaleva found a half-naked cat in the streets of Rostov-na-Donu. After a visit to the vet, the cat was found to be absolutely healthy and was named Varvaroy. It was the first Don Sphynx cat. Out of the mating with a common cat named Vasily was born a kitten named Chita. Irina Nemykina took this kitty and started a breeding program for this new naked breed. There was not any cat club in Rostov-on-don in those days, so Irina kept her studbooks herself. Of cource, there were far from precice, yet very helpful from a genetic standpoint. According to these documents it was determinated that the new gene for hairlessness is dominant to the gene fo normal coat. This was evident, becouse when heterozygous hairless cats were mated to normal coated cats, a number of hairless kittens always resulted in the litter. The first Don Sphynx kittens were born in Myth Cattery(owned by Irina Nemykina) out of Chita and Hannibal(mother and son). For the first time Chita, Hannibal and their kittens were shown at an exhibition in 1993, but the breed was officially recognized only in 1998.
