Peterbald rotuna

1.1.2007 Peterbald toivotettiin tervetulleeksi IV kategoriaan, joka kantarotunsa Don Sphynxin kanssa sai alustavan hyväksynnän FIFessä. Alustava hyväksyminen tarkoittaa, että näitä kahta rotua voi toistaiseksi näyttelyttää FIFessä vain näytteluokissa 7-12 ja serttejä voi saada luokista 7-10(kuten normaalistikin). Alustavasti hyväksytyt rodut, kuten Don Sphynx ja Peterbald saavat titteleikseen PCH, PPR, PIC, PIP. Jokaisen tittelin edessä oleva P tarkoittaa Preliminary, eli alustava. Rodun saavuttaessa täyden hyväksynnän P otetaan tittelistä pois. 

Kasvatuksessa Peterbaldeja saa risteyttää kaikkien kategorian IV rotujen kanssa. Näistä yhdistelmistä syntyneiden kissojen käytöllä kasvatuksessa on jonkin verran rajoituksia.

Koko ja ulkomuoto

Peterbald on keskikokoinen, elegantti, lihaksikas ja pitkälinjainen kissa. Ulkomuoto muistuttaa paljon Orientaal-lyhytkarvojen muotoa. Pään profiili on ilman painaumia oleva, otsasta alkava suora ja pitkä yhtenäinen linja. Mantelinmuotoiset silmät ja suuret korvat.

Kaikki värit ovat sallittuja ja kissat jakautuvat viiteen väriryhmään. Peterbaldeilla on sama karvattomuus-geeni kuin Don Sphynxeillä. Näyttelyissä brush-kissoilla ei serttioikeuksia.

Luonne    

Peterbaldit ovat hyväntahtoisia, uteliaita, viisaita ja energisiä, kuten Don Sphynxit. Ne rakastavat perhettään ja tarvitsevat paljon huomiota; ne eivät ole yksineläjiä, ihanne olisikin, että samassa perheessä myös kissakavereita, joiden kanssa leikkiä ja ottaa torkkuja yhdessä. Yleensä Peterbaldit elävät sovussa muiden kissojen, lemmikkien ja lasten kanssa.

Peterbald verrattuna Kanadan Sfinxiin:

Usein ihmiset kysyvät, mikä erottaa Peterbaldin Kanadan sfinxistä. Ajattelevat, että ovat samaa rotua koska kummallakaan ei ole karvoja. Molemmat ovat karvattomia, mutta omaavat eri geenit. Peterbaldien karvattomuus perustuu dominoivaan(kuten Don Sphynx) ja Kanadan sfinxien resessiiviseen geeniin. Ne myös näyttävät aivan erilaisilta.

Esimerkkejä eroavaisuuksista:

• Peterbaldin geeni on dominoiva, kanadan sfinxillä resessiivinen. Sfinxit tuntuvat kuin lämpöiseltä persikalta, Peterbaldeilla voi olla 5 eri karvattomuusastetta, nihkeästä täysin karvattomasta harja-tai straight(suora)turkkiin.
• Peterbaldin korvat asettuvat alemmaksi kuin kanadan sfinxillä.

Peterbald as a breed

 Appearance

Peterbalds have an elegantly slim build and distinctive head: Narrow and long with a straight profile, almond-shaped eyes and big set-apat ears. They are somewhat similar in appearance to Oriental shorthair cats. Peterbalds have the same hairlosing gene than Don Sphynx have. 

Temperament

Peterbalds are usually sweet-tempered, peaceful, curious, smart and energetic. They love their family members and need to communicate with them; They are not a loner type of cat. Peterbalds typically live in harmony with other cats and pets and also with children. They are not vindictive, and these characteristics make Peterbalds an exellent companion.

Peterbald compared to Canadian Sphynx:

I've heard, that often people ask what is the difference between a Peterbald and a Sphynx. Most people look at the cats and think "no hair, must be the same breed". They are both hairless, but for a different genetic reasons. The gene that makes the Peterbald hairless is a dominant gene(like Don Sphynx), whereas the gene that makes the Sphynx bald is a recessive gene. They have completely different look too.

Differences between the Peterbald and the Canadian Sphynx:

• The Peterbald gene is dominant, whereas the Sphynx gene is recessive. Sphynx feel like warm peaches or chamois, Peterbalds can have a variety of coats from sticky bald to a brush/straight coat.
• The head type of a Peterbald is a long elongated face, the Sphynx has a much shorter, wider face.
• The body type of the Peterbald is refined and elegant, the Sphynx is medium sized cat that is supposed to be a pear shaped.
• Peterbalds have almost almond shaped eyes, Sphynx have lemon-shaped eyes.
• Many Peterbalds have kinky whiskers, Sphynx usually have none or have broken whiskers.
• The ear set is lower on a Peterbald

Peterbald compared to Oriental/Siamese:

Differences between the Peterbald and the Oriental:

• Head shape of Peterbald is trapezoid-a long triangle with a blunted muzzle. The Oriental head shape is a triangle.(Muzzle is not blunt)
• The body of the PD is refined, but thicker around than the Oriental.
• All eye colours are allowed in the PD; eye shape of PD is almost almond-Oriental eye shape is almond.
• The profile of the PD is almost straight witha slight noticeable angle(two planed) whereas the Oriental has a straight profile.
• Ears of the PD are suppoesd to have ears set lower than the line of the wedge. This means theis ear set is actually lower than Oriental.
• The most obvious difference is the coat type of the PD- ranging from bald to brush. Orientals have normal, tight, painted coats.
